PHASING OUT OF THE R22 REFRIGERANT

If you are a user of an air conditioning system, you may be familiar with the term ‘refrigerant’, the substance contained in the coils of the air conditioning unit. R22 refrigerant is one specific type of refrigerant, and in January 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the production and importation of R22 because of its harmful impact on the ozone layer when released into the air, which contributes to its already depleting condition. Businesses and homeowners of systems that still use the R22 refrigerant are encouraged to have their units properly maintained to avoid leakage into the atmosphere.
